Logical Explanation

2007 Harrisburg PA.

Most of us know that the shortest distance from Point A to Point B is a straight line. I'm sure this feature comes with a very good explanation.

1936 Williamsport. PA.

With Williamsport under a flood watch today, I thought I would share this image of the 1936 flood. I think, but am not certain, that this is the area where Penn College is now. The Cromar factory is in the background. Perhaps someone will confirm that or correct my error. This is a scan of a 4x5 inch glass plate.

Celebrate the 40's

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
2010 Jim Thorpe, Pa.
Ahhh. Getting up to 40 this afternoon. That’s porch weather! This is a cyanotype, a process from the 1840's printed from a negative taken with a Zeiss Ikon box camera, made in the 1940's in Jim Thorpe, Pa. Thorpe played professional football into his 40's. That's the best I can come up with for the fourties in one image.

Tribute to Francesca Woodman

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
2012, Williamsport, Pa.
In January of 1981, Francesca Woodman decided she was not of this world. Before she left she created a wonderful body of work, mostly surrealistic self portraits. I often wonder where her work would have taken her if she had stayed. Today’s post is a tribute to a 23 year-old master.

Seeing Triple

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
2012, Williamsport, Pa.
This is one of those happy mistakes your digital camera won't make. The film did not advance and I ended up with an unintentional triple exposure. I'm very pleased with the results.

All I can say today is "brrrr"

I watched as this woman sat down, ordered brunch and assimilated into all the flowers in the frame. She even turned her face into the sun like all good flowers do.

Burlesque Performers

"As machines become more and more efficient and perfect, so it will become clear that imperfection is the greatness of man." Ernst Fischer
This has become my mantra as I move away from digital photography back to film. This portrait was taken on expired 4x5 Type 52 Polaroid film. When I use it I surrender a degree of control and let the medium influence the final image that is far from the perfection of a digital capture.

Live your Dream

I shot this from the hip while walking in Philadelphia and didn't read the ad on the back of the paper until I got home and produced the image.

Tin Can Day

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
2004 Recycling Center, Lycoming County Landfill, Montgomery Pa.
January 17, 1943 was proclaimed "Tin Can Day". Tons of tin cans were collected to be recycled for the war effort. It was considered unpatriotic to throw tin away. It is still politically incorrect.

Al Capone's Cell

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pa.
The 18th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting the "manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes," was ratified on this day in 1920. Bootlegging was just one of the things that landed Capone in jail.

Let's Make a Deal

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
It's a stretch but this image makes me think of Monty Hall and “Let’s Make a Deal”. Also, Jimmy Buffets song, my whole life is waiting behind “Door Number Three”.
Here - one door - the choice is, go left for Good Health or right for Prestige. Tough choice.

Penn State Women's Basketball

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
Headed out to shoot #8 Penn State Women's basketball again. They have become my cash cow for the winter as long as they stay ranked in the Top 10. Suddenly, I'm a huge fan.

Mary Ellen Mark

williamsport pa photographer, ralph wilson
Last September I took a workshop at Woodstock, NY presented by Mary Ellen Mark. In addition to being inspired by such an icon in the photo world, I came back inspired to bring visiting photographers to Williamsport and offer the same quality workshops at the Pajama Factory. Hence, the Williamsport Community Darkroom became Pennsylvania Photographic Workshops. We are bringing Carl Weese in June and Nancy Breslin in July. More will be announced as we book them.
